Confession:
I haven’t posted on Facebook since my daughter Noa was born.
She’s turning 8 in two weeks.
Social media just isn’t my thing.
I don’t need to see your beach vacation or high-end kitchen remodel. (Also not dying to see what my classmates from high school are doing. They were cool, and I wasn’t. I’ve come to terms with it.)
So when I decided to post on LinkedIn for the first time 4 years ago…
…I was not feeling confident.
In fact, I didn’t know my password and had never accepted a single connection request. I wasn’t even sure what people posted.
But I knew I had to start showing up if I wanted to grow my career.
So I drafted a post and sat down to publish it.
My hands shook.
I remember my buddy Jason standing behind me, calming my nerves as I hit “post.”
I was terrified people would judge me. Or I’d sound like I was trying too hard.
But here’s what actually happened:
That first post led to more posts. Which led to more speaking invites. Which helped me land a massive book deal.
It didn’t happen overnight.
It happened because I showed up — consistently.
And that’s how I started building my personal brand.
The Problem
A few months ago, a Google exec invited me to speak to his org.
He told me, “I want my team to be seen as industry leaders. I want them on LinkedIn and YouTube. Not to sell, but to serve and educate. To stay top of mind with clients.”
For years we were told, “Put your head down. Let your work speak for itself.”
That era is over.
If you want to…
– Be seen as a leader in your industry
– Get on your client’s radar
– Get promoted
– Land a book deal
– Or have people know what you actually do
…visibility isn’t optional anymore. (Not even inside your company.)
Your clients, potential employers, and collaborators are looking YOU up.
You want them to find something valuable when they do.
The Big Small Thing
Start posting 1x week on LinkedIn.
(No, you don’t need to go viral. And you don’t need a fancy ring light.)
Your goal? Add value and remind people what you do.
So when opportunities come up, they think of you.
Here are 5 easy ways to start:
1. Share a takeaway from a recent project or win.
Tell people what you’re working on and what you’re learning.
Example: Just wrapped a 3-week sprint with our product and data teams. The biggest surprise? Half of what we thought were user pain points were just internal workflow issues. We were solving the wrong problem. I used to think more data = better answers. Now I know more context = better solutions.
2. Post an article you loved and explain why it matters in your field.
Don’t just share it. Add your perspective!
Example: This article on psychological safety hit home. If you lead a team, it’s a must-read. I’ve seen firsthand how people speak up more when they know they won’t be punished for trying. Innovation doesn’t come from silence.
3. Snap a photo at an industry event or conference and share your top 3 takeaways.
Example: Loved attending the Leadership Summit this week. My favorite speaker Jenny Wood said something that stuck with me: “Excellence isn’t complicated: be consistent, be proactive, do one thing at a time.”
Pro tip: Take a selfie with different speakers and tag them. You’ll immediately get a boost of engagement!
4. Share a quick tip for people who are newer than you in your role.
Be the person you wish you had when you started.
Example: If you’re starting out in customer success, here’s something I wish I would have known: The sales team isn’t your enemy. Let them own the relationships, but offer proactive support. You’ll upsell more customers together.
5. Answer a question you’re frequently asked.
If people are asking you, other people are thinking it.
Example: People keep asking me: “How do I ask for a promotion without sounding entitled?” Here’s what I say: “I’d love to grow into X role. I’ve already been increasing my scope through Y, and I’m ready to lead at that level.”
How This Helps You Get What You Want
When you start posting on LinkedIn consistently, people start to remember you.
Not just for your title.
But for your perspective, leadership, and ideas.
It opens doors you didn’t even know existed:
Visibility creates opportunity.
Start posting. You’re ready.
